Where the 30KB limit usually comes from

It is a document-upload number. 30 KB is generous enough for a scanned page to stay readable and small enough for a system holding a lot of them.

Scanned documents are the common case at this size: an ID card, a certificate, a filled form, a proof of address. These are mostly white with dark text, which compresses far better than a photograph does, so 30 KB goes considerably further here than the number suggests.

That is the useful insight for this page. If you are compressing a photo to 30 KB you are making real quality sacrifices. If you are compressing a scanned document to 30 KB, you are probably losing nothing anyone will notice, because the page was mostly empty white to begin with.

It also means a document that will not fit under 30 KB is usually a scanning problem rather than a compression problem. A page scanned at 600 DPI in full colour carries several times the information of the same page scanned at 200 DPI in greyscale, and neither version reads any differently.

Getting it right

Getting a scanned document under 30KB and keeping it readable

Readability at this size is mostly decided by how the scan was made, not by how it is compressed.

Straighten and crop to the page edges first. A photo of a document taken at an angle on a desk includes the desk, the shadow and the perspective distortion, all of which cost bytes and none of which are the document.

If your scanner offers greyscale, use it for anything that is not a colour photo or a colour seal. Dropping colour removes two of the three channels before compression even begins, and for black text on white paper it costs you nothing at all. This is usually the difference between a document that fits at 30 KB and one that does not.

Watch out for compressing text-heavy scans as JPG. Letters are hard edges and JPEG smears them at low sizes. If your scan is a PNG and the text is crisp, keep it as a PNG: this tool reduces the colour count instead of blurring, and a black-on-white scan needs very few colours to look identical.

Compressing to 30 KB: common questions

What people ask before and after they hit the 30 KB button.

Usually because it was scanned in full colour at a high DPI. A 600 DPI colour scan of a text page contains vastly more data than the page actually holds, and compression can only do so much with it.

Rescan at around 200 to 300 DPI in greyscale if the document is text. The file will start smaller, reach 30 KB with far less compression, and read better than a heavily compressed high-DPI scan.

For a typical single page of text, yes. A cropped, greyscale scan of a document at 30 KB usually reads cleanly, because most of the page is uniform white that costs almost nothing to store.

Dense small print, handwriting in light pen, or a page with a photograph on it are the harder cases. If the result is not readable, the fix is a tighter crop and greyscale rather than a different compressor.
