9 Photo Collage Maker

Make a 9 photo collage from a single drop: nine photos fill a 3x3 grid of squares, three rows of three, with thin white lines keeping them apart.

Nine squares, three by three, runs in your browser

Nine photos, nine squares.
Nothing left over.

Nine is the tidiest number a collage gets. Three rows of three fill a square exactly, every cell comes out square, and no photo is stretched into a strip to make the count work.

Step by step

How to make a 9 photo collage

The grid is ready before you are. With nine photos, the real work is the order: which goes in the middle and which in the corners.

  1. Drop nine photos: Drag them onto the box at the top, or pick them from your files or camera roll. They fill the grid row by row, left to right.
  2. Choose the middle: The fifth photo in the strip lands in the centre cell. Drag your strongest photo into that spot.
  3. Balance the rest: Spread bright and dark photos around so no row looks heavier than the others.
  4. Reframe the cells: Click any cell and drag the photo inside it, or zoom in on a subject that came out small.
  5. Download: Choose PNG, JPG or WebP and an export size. Full size keeps the most detail in each small square.

The layout

A 3x3 photo collage, measured

This page opens on the Even template, the Square shape and thin white lines between the photos. The table comes from the same code that draws your download.

PartSize at 1080Photo shape that fits it

Photo 8338 x 349 px1:1, square
Photo 9349 x 349 px1:1, square
Even on Square, 9 photos, lines at 2% of the shorter side (22 px between). Worked out by the merger's own layout code at 1080 px on the shorter side; Full size grows the same layout until your sharpest photo fills its cell, up to 4000 px.

Every cell is within a hair of a perfect square. The middle column and the middle row are a touch smaller, because they carry a line on both sides.

Each cell is a third of the collage's side, minus the lines. That is why Full size matters more here than on a four-photo grid.

Grid shapes

A 9 photo collage grid on other shapes

Nine photos always sit in three rows of three. Change the Collage shape and every one of the nine cells changes with it.

Landscape 4:31440 x 1080 px469 x 349 px4:3, sideways
Even with 9 photos and this page's lines, on each of the five collage shapes, at 1080 px on the shorter side.

Portrait 4:5 gives nine cells in exactly the 4:5 shape, which suits phone photos held upright. Story 9:16 gives nine cells shaped like a phone screen.

On the wide shapes the cells turn landscape, which suits scenery more than people. A nine-photo group of faces is happiest on Square or Portrait 4:5.

Templates

Every 9 photo collage template, compared

Six templates sit above the preview. With nine photos on a square, only one keeps every cell a usable shape.

What each template does with nine photos on the Square shape

The featured templates put every photo but one in a single row or column. That suits five photos, and crowds nine. If one of your nine deserves more room, try the 5 photo collage and keep the other four for a second post.

Picking photos

Putting together a 9 picture collage that reads well

Nine pictures in a grid get read the way a page does, but the eye lands in the centre first. Plan for both.

  • Lead from the centre: The middle cell is where the eye goes first, so it should hold the photo the whole set is about.
  • Use the corners as bookends: Top left opens the story and bottom right closes it. A first moment and a last moment work well there.
  • Checkerboard the light: Alternate brighter and darker photos so the grid looks woven together instead of striped.
  • Repeat one colour: A colour that shows up in three or four of the nine ties the set together better than any filter.

Grid posts

A 9 photo collage is not an Instagram grid post

The two get mixed up all the time. A collage is nine photos in one image, and a grid post is one image cut into nine posts.

This page makes the first: nine separate photos combined into one square file you post once. It shows up as a single tile on your profile.

For the second, where one big picture spreads across nine tiles of your profile, you need the opposite tool. The Image Splitter cuts one image into a 3x3 set of tiles, in posting order.

FAQ

9 photo collage: common questions

Short answers about putting nine photos in a 3x3 grid.

Drop nine photos on this page. It opens on the Even template and the Square shape, which puts them in three rows of three straight away.

Drag thumbnails to change which photo sits where, then download.

Each cell is a third of the collage's side, minus the lines. The layout table above shows the exact numbers.

Export at Full size to give each square as many pixels as your photos allow.

No. A collage is nine photos in one image, posted once. A grid post is one image cut into nine pieces and posted nine times so your profile shows the whole picture.

For a grid post, use the Image Splitter instead.

Pick the photo the whole set is about: the group shot, the view, the moment everyone remembers.

It should also be the clearest at a small size, because the centre is the first place people look.

Yes. Mosaic stacks them in five rows of wide and narrow cells, with the ninth photo running the full width at the bottom.

Every cell is a landscape strip, so it suits scenery and panoramas better than faces.

Full size for a print or anything you might crop later, since nine small cells need every pixel.

1080p is plenty for a feed post, since social apps resize uploads anyway.

Nine photos. One tidy square.
